雄性激素主要是由性腺(睪丸)合成的一類內分泌激素,其主要負責男性副性器官如附睪、前列腺及陰莖的發育,并促進胡須和陰毛的生長,維持男性的性欲。此外,它還能調節全身代謝,通過強大的蛋白質合成作用使機體處于氮正平衡狀態,在兒童期表現尤為顯著。
具體來說,雄性激素能夠促進骨骼肌和骨胳中鈣鹽沉積,加速骨胳增厚與生長;同時增加基礎代謝率,刺激紅細胞生成等。其機制為睪酮進入前列腺、附睪等靶細胞后,轉化為5α-二氫睪酮,并與其細胞漿中的特異受體非共價結合,進而產生活性復合物,最終作用于染色質的非組蛋白,促進核糖核酸和蛋白質合成。
值得注意的是,一些睪丸素衍生物雖然雄激素活性減弱,但同化作用仍然顯著。這類化合物被稱為同化激素,能夠明顯促進蛋白質合成、增加肌肉發達程度和體重,并增強免疫球蛋白的合成,提升機體免疫力與抗感染能力。它們還能刺激骨髓造血機能及腎臟分泌促紅細胞生成素和正鐵血蛋白。
