1929年,P. Krais 發(fā)現(xiàn)6,7-二羥香豆素在紫外線下能發(fā)出熒光。織物浸漬其水溶液后顯示出增白效果。最早市售的熒光增白劑是1940年由聯(lián)邦德國(guó)Bayer公司生產(chǎn)的4,4′-雙嗪胺基二苯乙烯-2,2′二磺酸衍生物。此后,研發(fā)了多種熒光增白劑,形成了一整系列。
熒光增白劑俗稱“白色染料”,又稱光學(xué)增白劑,簡(jiǎn)稱增白劑。它是一種能在紫外光照射下激發(fā)出熒光的無(wú)色有機(jī)化合物。其增白作用基于光學(xué)上的補(bǔ)色原理:經(jīng)過處理后泛黃物質(zhì)不僅能反射可見光,還能吸收不可見的紫外光并轉(zhuǎn)化為紫藍(lán)色或青色的可見光反射出來(lái)。這些有機(jī)物能提高纖維織物和紙張等材料的白度。
具體來(lái)說,熒光增白劑能夠吸收330~360毫微米波長(zhǎng)的紫外光,并反射400~440毫微米的藍(lán)紫色光,與經(jīng)漂白處理但仍泛黃的織物反射出的黃色光互為補(bǔ)色。因此,兩者相加會(huì)呈現(xiàn)白色,從而使織物更加潔白。經(jīng)過增白處理后,由于有一部分紫外線也轉(zhuǎn)化為可見光反射出來(lái),反射總量增加,從而提高了織物亮度,使其更加潔白;同時(shí)也能增強(qiáng)有色織物的鮮艷度。
熒光增白劑與化學(xué)漂白不同,不會(huì)損傷織物的色澤和強(qiáng)度,但對(duì)于底色深暗的織物、紙張等材料來(lái)說,未經(jīng)漂白直接使用增白劑可能效果不佳。用于制作熒光增白劑的有機(jī)化合物需含有至少4個(gè)共軛雙鍵,如—C=C—C=C —C=C—C=C— 或—N=C—C=C—C=N—C=C—。常見的發(fā)色團(tuán)結(jié)構(gòu)包括:
